So many global events have conspired to create a new car market that is difficult to navigate for, and occasionally downright hostile to, buyers. In the year ending June 2023 the average new car sale was 8.5 percent above MSRP, those MSRPs continued to grow by some 7.4 percent, and transaction prices continued trending upward. According to data from iSeeCars, just six cars saw their transaction prices trend below MSRP in that 12 month period. So if you were looking for a deal on anything, where would you go?

In a year that saw Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds selling for 31 percent over MSRP, Ford Mavericks at 19.7 percent over sticker, and BMW X1s trading at 17.8 percent over, you’d be forgiven for thinking the answer is ‘nowhere’. You’re partially correct. There weren’t very many good deals to be had on new cars, and even if you could find something under MSRP, you were almost sure to get a horrid interest rate.

So let’s dig in and find out which six cars you could get for less than the number on the window.

Considering the Ioniq 6 is relatively fresh to the market, it’s surprising that it is already selling under MSRP. Okay, so it’s only 0.1 percent under, but that still counts. The average Ioniq 6 sold for $50,508.

There’s plenty of margin when it comes to full-sized pickups, so this isn’t really a surprise. There seems to be the beginnings of a trend of downsized pickups for normal everyday drivers, so perhaps most of the people interested in buying a basic Silverado are better served with something the size of a Colorado (or a Ford Maverick) instead. Even still, being 0.4 percent under MSRP is basically MSRP. The average Silverado 1500 sold for $51,835.

The second relative newcomer EV on the list is also the second member of the Hyundai Ioniq family. Is this a sign of things to come, or just a sign that Hyundai likes to wheel and deal? Half a percent under MSRP still isn’t all that much. The average Ioniq 5 sold for $51,289.

Again, there’s a ton of margin baked into the price of a pickup, and even more so Ford’s hybrid “Powerboost” pickups. Trading at 0.8 percent below MSRP there isn’t a lot of deal to be had there, particularly with the going price of these things. As luck would have it, the Powerboost models surveyed in iSeeCars’ data was an upscale Limited trim. That explains why the average price they found was a massive $84,146. Hey, at least buyers are saving around $700 off that massive price.

Like big trucks, there’s more margin to work with on large expensive luxury SUVs, particularly from the recently struggling Nissan luxury brand. There isn’t a lot of demand for these in the first place, so it makes sense that they’d have a bit of a discount on the hood to take one home. With car demand being what it was during this period, it’s still not much of a discount. The average QX80 sold for $81,292.

The average Pacifica Hybrid was going home with a new buyer with around $1,000 more in their pocket than the MSRP reflected between June and the previous June. I truly love these, and hope every new owner loves their plug-in van driving and ownership experience. Demand for vans, particularly pricey hybrid vans, is always pretty elastic. Lower the price and you’ll sell more of them. The average Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid sold for $49,661.
